What is a community built playground?
A
unique playground literally designed and constructed by our community!
Yes, imagine how excited our children will be when they see their own
ideas come to life. Imagine how much fun you'll have working side by
side with your neighbors, family and friends to construct a play area
especially tailored for our community. Imagine how close our community
can become by collaborating to design, fund, and construct a unique,
wonderful playground! Leathers Associates, a leader in community built
playgrounds, will be designing and directing our playground.
What can we expect at this park?
A unique, fenced-in playground designed for children of all ages, along with a "run through" spray fountain, picnic shelter, and memorial garden. The fenced in area will include a Tot-Lot for ages 2-5, and an older area for kids ages 5-12.
What is Leathers and Associates?
Leathers and Associates is a family owned business that has been designing and helping to build unique, community built playgrounds since 1971.They have built over 2000 playground in all 50 states and 7 countries.Leathers & Associates’ staff responsibilities run the gamut from administration to design, drafting, project management, and construction supervision. Employees have worked at Leathers for an average of ten years. Almost all employees are Certified Playground Safety Inspectors through the National Recreation & Parks Association. We will be working in conjunction with Leathers to design and build our own playground here in Mooresville. Please visit their site for inspiration and a greater understanding of the scope of this project.
When will the park be built?
The build week is scheduled for March 10th-14th.
Why community built?
The
result is an uniquely designed playground that builds bridges between
community members during planning and construction and provides our
children with a unique playing opportunity for years to come.
How many volunteers will be needed?
Literally
thousands of hours of volunteer labor will go into the planning and
construction of the park. On each build day alone, there will be three
shifts of 100-300 workers, both skilled and unskilled. Committees will
be working through the summer and fall to ensure that all preparations
are ready for the build week. Please visit the Volunteer page to see
the available opportunities.
Do I need to have any specific skills to volunteer?
No. The majority of the volunteers will have no construction experience or specialized skills.
How do I sign up to volunteer?
Please visit the Volunteer page and provide your contact information. We will contact you to schedule your time for those jobs you express interest in.
I’m not available, or able, to volunteer in March for the build week. Is there some other way I can help out?
Committees
are already being formed and volunteers are needed to plan and prepare
for the build week. Please consider volunteering your time for one of
these committees.
How can I donate?
First
and foremost we need your hands, hearts, bodies, and minds to make this
park happen. If you would like to go one step further and make a
monetary donation or donation of materials, equipment, or food, we are
happy to speak to you about sponsorship opportunities for both
individuals and businesses. Bricks, fence pickets, and individual
components will be “sold” to provide ample sponsorship opportunities.
Donations are tax deductible and letters will be provided for your tax
preparation needs.
Will child care be provided for workers during the build week?
The
child care committee is working on this question, but likely child care
will be provided in conjunction with the Lowe's YMCA child care program
on certain build days. Registration of children will likely be
required so we can provide for an adequate number of care providers.
Who will maintain the park?
The park is being built in conjunction with the Town of Mooresville who will be responsible for its ongoing maintenance.
Will there be bathrooms at the park?
Bathrooms will be available inside the Lowe’s YMCA during its regular business hours.
(Portable facilities will be provided for the build week.)
Is this playground for big kids or little kids?
The
playground will have a separate “Tot Lot” for kids ages 2-5 and a main
playground for ages 5-12. The playground will have typical equipment
like slides and swings, and unique, architecturally designed components
as well.
What is the Memorial Garden on the site plan?
The
Memorial Garden is still being designed. As envisioned, it will be a
garden retreat attached to the playground. The Memorial Garden is not
intended to be a memorial for any single individual, but a place to
memorialize members of our community, in an ongoing fashion. The
Memorial Garden will be established with the support of the Shierson
Society Winners' Circle which was founded in the memory of Doug
Shierson a local resident. For more information about the Shierson
Society Winners Circle or Doug Shierson please see the Story page on this web site.
