Shierson Society Winners' Circle
The Shierson Society Winners’ Circle was established in 2005 to honor Mooresville resident Doug Shierson, who had recently died from cancer. The proceeds of this private fund were intended to further the mission of the Hope at the Point Foundation (see below). The Shierson Family worked with the Foundation to utilize the net proceeds to honor Doug’s memory, his love of life and most importantly, his compassion for these causes. Recently, the Lowe's YMCA and the Town of Mooresville decided to work together to put a playground at the YMCA. The Winners’ Circle stepped up and suggested doing a community designed, community built playground. After two years of looking for a location, the stars have aligned and we are finally ready to go!
Doug Shierson
Doug Shierson was born, and lived most of his life, in Adrian,
Michigan. After racing and winning the SCCA Championship title two
years in a row, he traded his driver’s suit for a business suit. Doug
captured three straight Formula Atlantic championships as an owner
before moving up to CART racing. With Domino’s Pizza as his main
sponsor and drivers by the likes of Danny Sullivan and Al Unser Jr.,
the #30 car hit the pinnacle of racing in 1990. Douglas Shierson Racing
won the Indy 500 with driver Arie Luyendyk.
Doug Shierson was a
lover of cars and collecting art, but his greatest love was for his
girls: his wife and three daughters. Ironically, Doug Shierson and his
wife Fern, retired to Race City, USA, also known as Mooresville, NC.
His wife and two of the three daughters currently reside in Mooresville
along with four grandchildren. His third daughter and family reside in
Memphis, but plan on coming back to help with the park build in
March!
Leathers Associates
While visiting Pinehurst, NC, Doug’s daughter Sarah Dumser, visited a city park and was truly impressed with its unique design. When in Asheville, NC, she visited another unique playground and started to investigate. Both playgrounds had been designed by the same company, Leathers Associates out of Ithaca, New York. The idea of bringing a community playground to Mooresville was born! This would not be just any neighborhood playground, but a custom designed, community built, destination playground.
The Hope at the Point Foundation
The mission for The Hope at the Point Foundation is to focus our community on the needs of the less fortunate in our area. Contributions are designated toward the three “C’s” stated in their mission: Cancer, Community and Children. The Foundation look to draw upon the talents, experience and resources in our community to improve the condition of those suffering from cancer, increase opportunities for disadvantaged children and support organizations that see to enrich our community through charitable works and community service. A community playground, built for and by children, supports the philosophies of the Foundation. The annual HATPF gala will take place this year Saturday, October 3rd.
